Top 10 Things to do in Melaka for couples: Melaka Travel Guide

Tourists Places to visit in Malacca

We (my husband and myself) visited Melaka in the year 2011 and I just fell in love with this small town in Malaysia. After spending a splendid week in Singapore, we headed for Melaka formerly known as Malacca. Melaka was not on our itinerary as we had not heard of this place before. It was our friend who suggested we not miss this third-smallest Malaysian state.

And I am glad we took the decision to visit Melaka.

Malacca/Melaka At Malacca/Melaka

About Melaka:

Melaka is 245 km from Singapore and 148 km from Kuala Lumpur. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7th July 2008. The state capital Malacca Town is strategically located between the two national capitals of Malaysia and Singapore and is connected by excellent roads and highways.

According to a popular legend, when Parameswara stopped under a tree near a river (Malacca River) while hunting, one of his hunting dogs was pushed by a mouse deer when the latter was defending herself, the dog fell into the river. Impressed by the courage of the deer, Parameswara took this as a propitious sign of the weak overcoming the powerful and decided to build his new kingdom on that spot naming it Malacca after the tree under which he had been resting.

We took a bus with only 4 passengers on board. My husband and myself and two gentlemen. The bus left at its scheduled departure time. There was no stoppage in between except one at the checkpoint, where we had to get down to the immigration process. The bus was waiting for us while we cleared customs and immigration. It took 3 hours to reach the Malacca Sentral bus station. From there we took Panorama bus no.17 to Stadthuys. We followed the directions mentioned on Lonelyplanet to reach our guesthouse which we had booked at Riverone Guest House online.

Day 1 at Melaka: Top 10 Things to do in Melaka for couples: Melaka Travel Guide

After resting, we went for an evening stroll along the MelakaRiver. We enjoyed the fantastic street and artistic view of houses with amazing, vividly coloured murals by local artists.

As the temperature soars across Assam and Travel restrictions have been relaxed we decided to visit Dirang in the west Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. There are so many things to do in Dirang, so do make a detailed plan and check the weather before leaving.

Dirang is located at 4910 feet above sea level and is approximately 310 km from Guwahati. This quiet village and Bomdilla, both are overnight destinations for tourists heading towards Tawang from Assam.

One can also stay at Nameri/Bhalukpong and explore Nameri Tiger Reserve for 1 day and then continue their journey onwards.

2. Sela Pass:

It is the only route to Tawang. The roads are very curved, they are covered in snow during winter. The weather can be very unpredictable even during summer seasons so it is better to carry enough warm clothes. My son was expecting to see some snow but it was not snowing when we visited, it was very cold and windy with temperatures around 5 degrees. We all were shivering even after wearing sweaters and jackets and my daughter refused to wear any warm clothes. During winters one may get stuck for hours due to snow and landslides so you make sure you are carrying enough food and water with you as there are no tea or food stall (or maybe one or two) luckily we had packed our lunch and tea and ate it at Sela pass. One can also spot Yaks on the way.

 3. Sangti Valley:

It is one of the most beautiful valleys I have been to it is approximately 15 km from Dirang and is blessed with natural beauty and various flora and fauna. As one walks inside the valley you will be greeted by Kiwi trees and locally grown vegetables on both sides of the road. A walk beside the river is simply breathing. We booked our homestay at Sangti Valley and it was an isolated one with no internet connections. If you could spend at least one day in this beautiful valley, you won’t regret it at all. Don’t forget to carry your binoculars also as you are going to spot some exotic bird species.

4. Local Market:

I always make a point to visit the local market, whenever I visit a place, not particularly to buy something but to explore different kinds of local fruits and vegetables available there. And I have always found something interesting which is not available in our market or cities. Some local fruits and vegetables that were available in the market were Kiwi, Apples, sweet Kerela, almonds, and milk products like cheese made from yak’s milk.

5. Kalachakra Gompa: Things to do in Dirang

It’s a 500-year-old monastery and a major tourist attraction. Mostly pilgrims and Buddhist monks are seen visiting this sacred place.

There are a few other places like Dirang Dzong ( It is a 17th-century citadel that was built to protect Bomdila from invasions) and National Research Centre on Yak that one can visit, but we had to miss them as we didn’t get time to cover these places.

Where to stay in Bomdila or Dirang

Not many options to choose from, but one can book hotels or homestays in Dirang/ Bomdilla or Sangti valley. We stayed in Letro Homestay at Sangti Valley. The owner was very helpful. Check here for availability

How to reach Dirang or Bomdila?

By Plane:

The nearest airport to Dirang, Bomdila or Tawang is Tezpur and Guwahati in Assam. From Guwahati/Tezpur one can take a cab to Bhalukpong)/Tezpur check post and from there one can take a shared taxi to Bomdilla or Dirang. I would advise you to take a cab or your private car for the whole journey or book your trip through some travel agents. One is also required to take Inner Line Permit before visiting Arunachal Pradesh. (ILP can be obtained online for Rupees 50 per person)

Check your flight here

By Train:

The nearest feasible station is Guwahati. Shared cabs are available at the Dirang Taxi Counter in ASTC bus stand in Paltan Bazaar. There are buses that run between Guwahati and Bomdila/Dirang/Tawang from ISBT Bus Stand in Guwahati.

We took our car from Guwahati.

Weather in Dirang- Arunachal Pradesh:

The best time to visit is Between October to April.

The weather is mostly cold but can be unpredictable at times. When we visited in October the weather was clear and sunny with temperatures at around 30 degrees Celcius and at night it was about 15 degrees. Keep 2-3 days extra as you might get stuck due to landslides or snowfall like we came back to Bomdilla and stayed there for the night from Tenga Valley as roads were closed due to landslides. Check what to pack for a one-day outing with a kid.

The whole trip was rejuvenating for us and the kids also loved exploring these places. As these places are still not very popular among tourists there were not many people from outside thus making the tourist places less crowded and peaceful.

Deyga Organics Product Review

I have always preferred natural and organic products as they are not only safe for us but the environment as well. My love for sustainable and natural products has been a part of my growing years. And even when buying beauty products and cosmetics, I always prefer the organic skincare range. Recently I have included two products in my skincare regime and I will share the Product Review of Deyga Organics Skincare. Before that, it is very important to understand why to use Organic Skin Care Products?

Deyga Organics
Deyga Organics Products

Why Choose Organic Skin Care Products?

We often ignore taking care of our skin and end up using beauty products that are loaded with harmful chemicals which do more harm than good. It is advisable to use organic skin care products as they are made up of natural ingredients and do not contain any harsh chemicals. While choosing an organic skincare product, read the label to know what ingredients they have used in making their products. Organic products use natural ingredients and are made in small batches, use sustainable practices in producing them, and leaves a positive impact on the environment as well as on our skin and Deyga is one such product.

Deyga is a home-grown brand with a strong belief that their traditional rescue for skin and hair will always make one’s life easy & satisfied. All of their products are handcrafted with love. Their products range from skincare, haircare, lip care, oral care, foot care, eye care, baby care, bath & body care, wellness, etc.

With a very hectic schedule and being a mom of two kids, I used to find it hard to make time for myself and this was reflected on my skin as well. With that, I realized no matter how busy you are it is very important to set aside at least 5-10 mins for yourself from your busy schedule and pamper yourself to some skincare products.

It is important to include the three basic steps:

Cleansing (Washing your face with water), Toning (Balancing the skin), and Moisturizing (Hydrating and softening the skin) daily and consistently following this you will notice the difference. The other products that are to be used occasionally or daily depending on one’s skin type and conditions are scrubs, face masks, facial oil, serum, under-eye cream, etc.

I had ignored face toner, but now I have promised not to do so. What are face toners and what do they do?

Facial Toner:

People often ignore to use or don’t know the (Like me) importance of using face toner. Face or skin toner is used before moisturizing, absorbs liquid that helps to remove excess dirt, traces of makeup, and oil, correct and balance the pH of your skin. In other words, a facial toner thoroughly cleans the skin and helps remove built-up surface dead skin cells, close pores, and balance pH, it’s especially beneficial for acne-prone skin. Some toners contain alcohol, so I prefer to use natural toners like Deyga Organics for my skin.

Product Review of Deyga Organics Rose Facial Toner:

Deyga is a pure steam-distilled rich floral blend that helps hydrate restores ph balance and tone skin. It acts as a natural moisturizer that helps your skin glow, tightens pores, prevents wrinkles, and gives you beautiful skin.
It comes in a transparent plastic spray bottle and can be easily carried in a purse also. It has a very mild fragrance of rose which is the main ingredient. One can apply it 3-4 times a day also for a fresh feeling during the summers. Free from any kind of chemicals this toner is perfect for all types of skin. I am using it 2-3 times a day and I am totally in love with it. And am I going to buy it again? Yes definitely.

Benefits:

  • When used regularly, it helps to prevent wrinkles and tighten pores.
  • Nourishes and keeps your skin hydrated, naturally.
  • Freshens your skin by removing breeze & pollutants.
  • Restores ph balance, tightens pores, helps fight pollutants, hydrates, and gives glowing skin

The other product that I am using for the last few months is Their Rose and Face Pack.

Face Packs:

Face packs help in moisturizing, cleansing, toning, and rejuvenating your skin. They are a great way to relax, treat and pamper your skin.  They also help in absorbing excess oils. Always look for face packs that contain natural ingredients like, sandalwood, turmeric, rose, lavender, etc. For busy women and moms like me who don’t get time to visit a spa or salon often, face packs can be very rejuvenating and refreshing.

There are many face packs that are available in the market but always choose a natural/herbal one as they are free from harsh chemicals and are suitable to one’s skin type. It is always advisable to do a patch test before applying to check for any reactions.

5 Best Baby Cloth Diapers

Cloth Diapers, also commonly known as modern Cloth Diapers, are reusable diapers that can be used again after being washed, cleaned, and dried. Unlike disposable diapers thrown away, cloth diapers can be used again and again. Modern cloth diapers come with a waterproof outer layer and the inserts are a combination of different materials like microfiber, hemp, organic cotton, and bamboo charcoal to give maximum absorbency. Once soiled they are washed and can be used again.

Before disposable diapers came into the market people were using only the traditional cloth diapers or nappies only. The traditional diapers which our mother had used lacked absorbency, were ineffective and would be required to change after 2-3 pees. But with time cloth diapers have evolved and modern cloth diapers are more absorbent, leak-proof, come in attractive prints, are eco-friendly, are a safer option for babies and are light in your pocket too in the long run.

Disposable Diapers Vs Cloth Diapers

Disposable diapers are convenient to use as they are thrown away after use. As they don’t require any washing, they are convenient to use and make life easier. But they are not at all safe for the environment and nor for the baby. As disposable diapers have chemicals to increase absorbency they are harmful to the environment and can cause rashes in babies. On the other hand, cloth diapers have the following benefits:

  • doesn’t contain harmful chemicals thus making it safe for the baby and the environment
  • makes toilet training easy
  • economical in the long run
  • never have to worry about buying diapers monthly or when you run out of stock
  • one free-size diaper suits infants as well as toddlers thus saving money

What are the different cloth diapers?

Flats:

Flats are the oldest and have been in use for ages. They can be folded as per convince and secured onto the baby with a diaper cover, or cotton nappy, pin with a snappy or can be used as inserts with pocket diapers.

Nappy or Langots:

It is a single piece of cloth that is tied to the baby. They don’t have any absorbency capacity and need to be changed each time a baby pees. They can be used as diaper-free time or can be used with flats.

Prefolds:

Prefolds are rectangular diapers with multiple layers of lightweight, woven fabric with extra layers in the centre panel for absorbency. They are easy to use with diaper covers or pockets.

Pockets: Best Cloth Diapers in India

They are easy to use and they dry up quickly. They have a waterproof material outside and soft microfleece stay dry material inside. Any type of inserts can be put inside and together they form a pocket. They are especially suitable when the baby starts moving.

Diaper Covers: Best Cloth Diapers in India

As the name suggests diaper covers are waterproof covers and can be used with flats, inserts or prefolds. They can be used again with any inserts without washing. They are very helpful during travelling with your baby.

AIOs:

In Aios the inserts are sewed to the stay-dry lining and the waterproof outer layer. Some also have pockets where you can put inserts to increase the absorbency. After use, the whole diaper goes for washing.

Fitted Diapers:

They come with or without snaps and are highly absorbent and also come with inserts to boost absorbency. They have elastic at the legs and with or without snaps for closure. They need a diaper cover to become waterproof from the outside.

Hybrid Diapers:

Hybrid diapers are diapers that use the best of cloth and disposables. These diapers comprise cloth covers that are sized and trim and work with both washable and disposable inserts. The covers do not need a daily wash and can be reused with a simple swap out of the insert on the same day. In short, these diapers give you the convenience of disposables and the health of cloth all in the same diaper.

Bdiapers hybrid diapers are India’s only hybrid diapers that come with chemical-free disposable inserts. These cloth covers are waterproof and washable with the option of using a disposable or reusable insert. These diapers are designed to allow for the passage of air thereby reducing the growth of bacteria, making them guaranteed rash free. The Bdiapers disposable nappy pads are bleach, fragrant and dye-free hence hypoallergenic. These diapers are sized to fit and trim, and the cloth covers do not need a daily wash. You can reuse the cover with a simple change of insert on the same day by wiping clean the pouch. Bdiapers brings you the option of several matching accessories like T-shirts and bandana bibs making your hybrid diaper a functional fashion statement for your bub. Prices for these start at Rs 399/- with the option to save big on larger packs of nappy pads. They are available on Amazon, Flipkart and all major marketplaces.

How to wash baby cloth diapers:

Generally, the following steps are followed while washing cloth diapers but do check what is mentioned in the wash care routine of the respective brands.

Steps in washing cloth diapers:

  • rub it well and rinse it well
  • then put it in other regular clothes to wash and dry out in the sun.

How to Travel with Cloth Diapers: My Experience

Traveling with Cloth Diapers

I have used only cloth diapers for my daughter since she turned 4 months. And while travelling also I wanted to use cloth diapers only. As we were home only last year, it was easy to manage. But I was not very sure how will I manage with cloth diapers during travelling. And at the same time, my inner voice was not ready to use any disposable diapers. But I am so glad that with proper planning and determination we managed our trips with cloth diapers. Though ours were short-duration trips, it was a great experience as this will help me in planning future trips.

Here are a few pointers which I want to share about my experience on How to travel with Cloth Diapers with parents who want to use cloth diapers only during travelling:

1) Our flight from Mumbai to Guwahati was in the morning, so the previous day I used only cotton nappies and washed, them and let them dry after each use so that I can take them with me. (if you are not planning to take them with you then one can also wash them and let them dry at some proper place in the house). For any number of days, Flats work best as they are easy to wash and dry really fast.

2) I removed the nighttime Cloth diaper and packed it in the luggage bag. (washed it at my home)

3) While travelling from Mumbai to Guwahati (6 hours), I made my daughter wear a pocket diaper with 2 inserts, assuming I would not be required to change (unless she has pooped)

Traveling with Cloth Diapers on the flight
Travelling with Cloth Diapers on the flight

4) Carried 2 sets of Cloth diapers in the diaper bag. One that would last for 4-5 hours- (if she poops after reaching Mumbai airport or just before boarding the plane) and the other one with pee holding capacity for 1-2 hours (if she soiled the diaper after we had landed at our destination.)

5) Wet bags to keep soiled diapers, and cloth wipes (I make my own wipes)

Wet Bags to keep soiled Cloth Diapers
Wet Bags to keep soiled Cloth Diapers

6) During our road trips, we stayed at the resorts/hotels for 1 or 2 nights, so bought back the diapers and washed them at home. And according to my, Flats would work best for the day and night time when traveling, as they dry up faster than other inserts.

Traveling with Cloth Diapers
Travelling with Cloth Diapers

7) Allowed diaper-free time early in the morning (the time after waking up and before leaving for the day) and in the evenings (after coming back to the hotel)

8) Change the Cloth diaper after 3 to 5 hours depending on the type of inserts used and mode of transport used.

9) Training pants or cotton nappies work great as diaper-free time and they came to my rescue during these travelling times.

10) Cleaned the diaper area with my homemade solution and apply coconut before putting in a new diaper.

It has been a smooth ride till now with cloth diapers. The only mistake I did was not giving her some diaper-free time while travelling from Jorhat to Guwahati (6 hours by road). Since we left in the morning and we were in a little hurry we changed her diaper just before leaving and as a result, she did get some rashes. And this was a great learning point for me.

It is very important to allow some diaper-free time even for 5-10 mins during travelling. If you are worried about cleaning the poop, then there are biodegradable disposal liners which make poo cleaning very easy. (Luckily our daughter didn’t poop on the flight or in the car during these trips).

Till then happy travelling……
